PLAYWORKS, MUSICALWORKS WINNERS CHOSEN – Educational Theater Association

“Four plays and one musical in the making have been selected for development and staging at the 2015 Thespian Festival, June 22-27 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The student authors will work with professional playwrights, directors, and corps of actors to put their scripts and songs on their feet.

Cat Reynolds from Cypress (Texas) Ranch High School was named the winning finalist of Thespian Musicalworks 2015, for the selection “More” from her original musical [Group]. The show deals with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. ‘I wrote this musical to truly highlight the struggles teenagers face, and how they’re often told to just be happy, or that it’s just a phase,’ Cat said. ‘I wanted to use my voice to speak for those who felt silenced… I want to prove to anyone watching [Group] that they are not alone.’” READ MORE…

“Fresh off winning a $3,000 scholarship at the Tommy Tune Awards, Rebekah Stanley starred May 7 in a new musical, ‘Group,’ which was written by Caitlin Reynolds, a fellow senior at Cypress Ranch High School….

The show at Cypress Academy of Performing Arts was good practice, Stanley said, for showcasing a shorter version the cast will perform at Thespian Festival 2015, to be held June 22–27 on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

‘My favorite song in the show is “More,” ‘ said the 18-year-old daughter of Kenneth and Roxanne Stanley.

“VSA, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, announces the  winners of the 2014 VSA Playwright Discovery Competition. Eight high school playwrights from the Senior Division (grades 10-12) are invited to participate in a weekend of pre-professional activities at the Kennedy Center during the annual Page-to-Stage festival. The young playwrights will engage with seasoned professional playwrights, directors and actors to refine their scripts and further develop their playwriting skills.
